Not just another Holocaust memoir. Instead, Mendelsohn's tale unravels like a grandparent's story or a classical epic - seemingly unrelated facts creep in only to assume tremendous importance later as the story loops through retelling from a different perspective. At the same time, Mendelsohn relates his personal quest and his family's story to Biblical and classical examinations of the meaning of life, family, and relationships. It is a tour-de-force.
