I loved Elizabeth Moon's Paksenarrion books, and this one begins where that trilogy ended. I think the writing is stronger in this book (and its sequel, Kings of the North), evidence of Moon's now much greater experience as an author. This new trilogy doesn't focus on Paks, which at first I found disappointing, but I ended up eagerly following the stories of all of the main protagonists. Many of the characters are still familiar, and Paks does poke her head in several times, so the story feels like it builds well out of the previous books. I've heard this trilogy is also supposed to be an alternate entry into the universe, but it's hard for me to judge that, since I've read the Deed of Paksenarrion trilogy so many times!
