Don't be deceived by the title and the dust jacket description. This is not a novel principally about the origins of the comic book industry, but is rather a character study of two very different cousins, united by their passion for story-telling in the comic book format and ultimately by their very different personal scars.

Yes, one learns a great deal about the birth of the comic book arising at the intersection between the raw commercialism of the businessmen who moved into comic books from the pulp novel industry and the idealism of the those that created and illustrated the stories. But that is only the setting for this engaging and insightful coming-of-age buddy story. The vivid characterization and character development are what set this book above others.
