At its best this book is an amazingly vivid window into the dark ages. The earlier chapters are a stunning chronicle of the collapse of classical civilization and the onset of the thousand year stranglehold put on Europe by the Roman Catholic church. Unfortunately, far too much of the book is devoted to the politics, intrigues, and corruption of the church and the ruling families (of Italy in particular) during the 15th and 16th centuries. The revelations of the earlier chapters give way to an academic drone on degenerate popes and ruthless Borgias.
