Read from April 26 to May 13, 2012

This is the first time I've given a book in this series less than 4 stars. Perhaps I should have waited a while before starting this one to refresh myself a bit, because once I started it felt like a chore to wade through 1000 more pages. (This could also be because I read the hardcover edition which weighed about 20 kgs.)

For a book so big, it didn't really feel like that much happened. Previous books were narrated by around 10-12 characters. This time there were 18 different perspectives. So to cover this much ground the story sort of had to go sideways rather than forwards. Don't get me wrong, I love how all the characters collide and interact, it just felt bogged down at times... A lot of action used to happen "off screen", but now it feels like every detail is being described (including every ingredient in a dish, or every piece of clothing someone wears).

Now I've caught up with the series, I join the millions of others around the world waiting eagerly for the sixth book, and who knows how many years away that will be! I loved the epilogue, it brought back a character that had almost been forgotten about and of course ended with a cliffhanger. Hopefully there are more Stark chapters in the next one!

(Ps I loved the dragons)
