Jon Klassen must have had a dearly-loved hat stolen from him at some point in his life. That's the only explanation I have for his fixation on stolen hats and getting revenge for the thievery.

I might have liked this book more if I didn't already love I Want My Hat Back. For a long time I didn't understand why he published both of these books about getting back a stolen hat. The differences are 1] that one is seen from the point of view of the one whose hat was stolen, and the other is told from the point of view of the thief; 2] they are both all dialogue, but one speaker is reliable and one is unreliable.

And that's why I have learned to like this title (not as much as I Want My Hat Back, but a little). This is good for teaching not just inference, but also what an unreliable narrator is. It builds visual literacy. You can't know the truth of this story without understanding the illustrations as well as the text.
