I had not read Shanghai Girls when I started Dreams of Joy, but no problem, as I was transported to newly closed Red China with all of the preceding history. This story is told with such detail to historic principals and research, as well as cultural values and norms. I was utterly inspired by the relationship Lisa See has developed between Joy, her mom, and her aunt. Sometimes you find out that a noun really is a noun, not a verb.
