bookshelves: fable, tradition

After hearing this story for the first time tonight, I truely have a new favorite book. I had never read the story, which is a fable. Fables are always great stories for children to hear because of the valuable lesson behind it. A young boy from China is competing with others to grow the prettiest flowers and become emporeror because the other one is handing down the title. All of his friends grow beautiful flowers and he cannot. When he goes to the emporor he is crying. Turns out, he is the only one who was honest, and good things happen to him. I also love the story because it shows culture.

Extension: Have the children do a chart story. Make up your own version as a class. That way the can choose what the right choices are and you will be able to see if the children understoood the objective or not. You may need to use pictures, or you may use words. I feel like the story can be great for many different grade levels.
