This is a thoughtful book for kids who are on the older end of the chapter book spectrum about young Brendan, whose desire to find/build a relationship with his maternal grandfather is complicated by his mixed-race heritage. I liked how the book tackled big, complex ideas in an age-appropriate manner but I found the writing slightly repetitive, with some telling rather than showing. However, these minor flaws didn't prevent me from enjoying the story, and it won't prevent me from recommending it to young readers either.
