I feel more than a bit conflicted here.
The setting is phenomenal. The prose style is witty and colorful, and the author clearly understands how to do narration. The story seems real interesting, and the first 100 pages or so are really quite interesting.
But then what? I'm not so sure. It seems to peter out. Maybe the author lost interest and tied it up later.
'Undefined' or 'ambiguous' endings are not bad by any means. I did appreciate part of the feelings behind the end. Life goes on, the family survives, wounded as it is. But the whole narrative seems to fade out.
It's not bad by any means, just - 'eh'. And one Shouldn't Feel 'Eh!' at a book that started so well!
