The list of authors who can write a good fable is, on any account, a small one. My list is composed entirely of Kipling, MacDonald, and, now, Rowling. This is a handful of fun little stories which were written for charity. I admire Rowling's ability to create a multilayered, multivocal text: this has Dumbledore's notes attached to the stories, and Rowling (the editor's) notes explaining Dumbledore's (for Muggle readers).
