Wow. What a beautiful book. This is the perfect mix of great tension, plenty of action, and lovely characterization. When Ludelphia leaves her sharecropping home to try to find medicine for her deathly ill mother, she faces all sorts of obstacles, from unjust treatment by the bossman's widow to a ferry that breaks off its cable and carries her downstream. Through it all, Ludelphia quilts and tries to keep the faith. Like Christopher Paul Curtis' books, Leaving Gee's Bend is such a great combination of serious and funny, and it makes me appreciate the world a little bit more.
