I've read some of the later books in this series, so I know that there's some interesting world-buildy stuff that occurs. It's not a bad premise for an erotica novel (or series), but its execution is only slightly above average.

Girlfriend loves her modifiers--adjectives, adverbs, all the modifiers!--and it makes for some stilted prose that often meanders into purple. The other thing that got me (and perhaps this is because I read so many action-packed books) is that her action scenes--not her Action Scenes, because those were fine, if archaically worded, and yes I know it's historical fiction--ahem, the point is, her action scenes, even down to the simple passage where Izabel slaps Jane, could use serious work. The climax of the book, too, or at least the first climax (multiple climaxes; touche), is nearly skimmed over in its hurry to be on to the next sex scene already. The novel hurts for it, because if I've noticed no other pattern in erotica, it's that many books that try to cover too many bases end up getting nothing right. If you can't write action, don't include it; or, better yet, read action scenes (not How To Write Action Scenes), and begin to hone your craft.

3.5 stars.
