This is one of those rare occurances - a non-fiction book that was impossible to put down. The book is an extremely readable account of the "dust bowl" during the 1930s. Intertwined with the facts are family story lines that personalize the horrific events that occurred not so long ago. The images of black blizzards, dust pneumonia and hordes of locusts are hard to dispel. Although this may make it sound like a depressing (no pun intended) book it is truly a testament to the strength and determination of the 20th century pioneer.
