This book began as one of the best books I'd read in a long time, and I started to savor it. The theme is mythic, even Shakespearian--how to make copies of yourself that do the daily work for you. But about halfway through I realized the book had run its course, and from there the confusing plot and the zeal to create an entire encyclopedia of this Kiln world kept piling on until I just skimmed the final third to see what was going to happen to some of the main characters--sadly, nothing much seemed to happen, nothing worth remembering. This is a book with a great idea that just got out of control. I've never read a book that began so well and fell apart so spectacularly.
