The Rock Star in Seat 3A
by Jill Kargman

I received an uncorrected proof through the first-reads program through Goodreads.
I thought I would love this book, because sitting next to a rock star (or any of my idols) on a plane is definitely a fantasy of mine. Love is not a word I would use to describe this book, though I didn't hate it either. I just had a lot of issues with the main character and the prose.
I love a good curse word, when there's actually a reason for it, like if I injure myself, but at my age (which happens to be younger than the main character), I'm totally over cursing because I think it makes me cool. The MC and her friends are not, and it gets old pretty fast. The author also uses references to describe things and situations constantly, which I consider to be lazy writing. It's hard to understand what the MC is talking about if I don't understand the references. I did understand about half of them, it's just that there are so many. The author also makes up her own words, which is okay once in a while, but it seems like overkill in this book.
Another issue I have is that each chapter begins with a quote. I think it distracts from the flow of the story to have to stop and read a quote before each chapter. It also seems a bit pretentious to me.
Page-wise, it's not a long book, but quite a few chapters nearly bored me to sleep.
One thing I did really like is the MC conversations with her sister. It's the only time the MC seemed like a real person to me.
Keep in mind that I received an uncorrected proof copy, so things might have changed before publication.
