Read from April 24 to May 11, 2012

I came straight out of reading Trainspotting for the first time to discover that this brilliant prequel had just been published. I immediately ordered a copy and jumped back into the world of those familiar characters i had been so unhappy about leaving behind.
This novel is, in my opinion, better than Trainspotting and certainly feels more crafted and whole than Trainspotting; which is basically a compilation of stories and heroin-lifestyle anecdotes with a heist ending. Skagboys, by comparison, is a lot deeper and, though Trainspotting is certainly great fun, more fulfilling than Welsh's first novel.
If Trainspotting was a portrait of the life of an Edinburgh junky, this is more to do with how people become drug addicts and why. I would also note that this novel is hilarious and sits perfectly well as a work in itself which could easily stand apart from Trainspotting. It is not necessary to have read one to enjoy the other.

Andrew Sam FYI the sequel to Trainspotting is 'Porno', and it's well worth reading too!

Sam Thanks. I picked up a copy in the local Post Office last week, it's on my to-read list.
