While I enjoyed The Black Path, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the others in the series. Even though the collaboration of western business with corrupt African governments is a subject worthy of our attention, I found that it distanced the story a bit from the characters I've come to love. Much of the action takes place away from Kiruna.

That said, it's still a good story. As always, I am grateful to Ms. Larsson for including characters who love their pets, and for all the attention she pays to details of setting and the vagaries of characters. Her description of the Sami artist and her foster daughter were outstanding. They made me want to take up my paintbrush. I almost feel as if I would like to have a novel just about the minor characters who quietly go about their daily lives while the wealth-tainted business people steal the plot away from them. Perhaps this is the point of the story after all.
