I have never read anything like this before. Having finished The Sense of an Ending I thought I'd try something else by Barnes and was taken aback at just how incredible this book is. The chapters are a succession of varied stories, although there are numerous links and recurring themes throughout. My particular favourites are those relating to The Raft of Medusa, which are astounding and really made me consider just how complex art history is. Sounds dull you may think but Barnes has a lightness in his writing that makes potentially dry concepts not only accessible but geniunely interesting and adds a splash of humour throughout.
