An enchanting read. I'd already seen the film which, I found out, follows the book almost to a tee. I love the seeming purposeless interactions of our four female lead characters: Mrs Wilkins (Lotty); Mrs Arbuthnot (Rose); Mrs Fisher; Lady Caroline (Scrap). This meandering eventually leads to "curious sensations" led by Lotty who brings out love and beauty, the enchanted San Salvatore--an Italian mediaeval castle--vacation ultimately changing the direction of each character's life.

Lately I find comfort in this type of slow, character driven Brittish novel.
