As somebody who has put quite a bit of effort into building up a social life in Sacramento over the past few years, I found a lot to relate to in this book. My second year living here I had a campaign I dorkily called "Friends for Leslie 2006." As part of that campaign I met a friend who started a book club that I took over a couple years later and still run today. My best local friends are people who I met through that book club. I really enjoyed reading about the author's search for friends in her new city, and found myself wishing that she'd been around when I was looking for new friends in mine. I'm not a big fan of the term "BFF," which is used a lot in this book (and is obviously right in the title, so it's not like it was a surprise), but small quibble aside I had a lot of appreciation for the author's musings on various theories of friendship. It gave me a lot to think about as I continue to build my social network.
