This book is about Billy and his two coonhounds old dan and little ann. Billy and his dogs become legandary in their town and are challenged to catch the ghost racoon against rubin and rainies dogs. Their dog old blue challenges old dan and looses with the help of little ann and rubin tries protecting his dog with an ax and ends up dying. Later entering a championship hunt they win this as well. Then after facing a mountain lion old blue dies and little ann cant handle his death. She passes away a few days later and Billy burries them side by side where a red fern grows. Its said only and angle can plant one.
This is my all time favorite book and is well written through the characters as well as the plot. Reading this book puts the reader right in the middle of the story and gets you emotionally attached to billy and his dogs. Billy old dan and little ann make you fall in love with them because of the relationship and bond that they share with one another. With all the conflicts they encounter makes it very realistic and could happen to anyone on any given day during this time period. The theme of this story is still relevant in todays world because of how the dogs and Billy get along. Entering contests and showing the love for eachother. I just cant say enough about this book.
This is a wonderful book to read in a classroom because it shows friendship, loyalty, and respect which is all important in todays society. This book will engage children in reading and it will keep them interested the whole way through will gettin emotionally envolved as well. Great!!!!
