Jeanette Winterson is an award winning British author. The title of the book comes from a comment made by her mother, Mrs. Winterson. And yes, her mother is always referred to as Mrs. Winterson in the book. Jeanette's mother was not happy, to say the least, that Jeanette preferred women instead of men. When her mother asked her about it, Jeanette responded she preferred to be happy. To this, her mother responded, why be happy when you could be normal (heterosexual). Jeanette was adopted and she details growing up in quite a dysfunctional family, how this affected her and relationships and finding her birth mother.
