I expected to be way more into this series than I was. This book was definitely the best of the lot, but that's not really saying much. Susan Cooper plays fast and loose with Welsh mythology, and while the dramatic tension of the quest in this book was definitely better managed than in previous installments, there were still certain bits that came out of nowhere, tacked on almost as afterthoughts (such as the revelation of the White Rider's alter ego, and the forced heterosexuality of Will thinking Jane pretty.) There were some really good philosophical bits, otherwise, and I love the following quote:

"I believe in God-given free will, you see. I think nothing is forced on us, except by other people like ourselves. I think our choices are our own."

I also liked the idea of the different races being gentled, eventually, from the murderous influence of the Dark. Overall, a great idea and some excellent imagery, but the execution was spotty.
