I don't know that I would call this a sequel to Ship Breaker, any more than Windup Girl or Calorie Man were prequels. All are set in the same world, and there is a single character overlap between Ship Breaker and The Drowned Cities.

This novel further explores how awful the future could be, and focuses in on war, child soldiers, and, of course, futility. If you are looking for something uplifting, you might want to keep looking. If you are looking for a fascinating read set in a bleak future exploring dark subjects, clear your calendar a bit because I couldn't put this book down.
