I really liked this at first, or maybe I just thought I did because I think Philip Pullman is great. Anyway, then that terrible thing happened where I realized I didn't like the book and it wasn't going to get any better. I deemed it too British, a weird designation I don't think I've ever perceived before, and couldn't (i.e. lacked the will to) follow what was going on anymore. Hats off to Pullman for so skillfully re-creating the dreary verbosity of books written--not only about--but DURING the early 1800s, but I'm not sure that's something to aspire to even though it's impressive.
