This was a pretty epic, fantasy novel in the classic style. Prue's little brother, Mac, is captured by crows and taken into the wooded area known as the Impassable Wilderness, which is right outside of Portland where she lives. Prue and her classmate Curtis brave the woods to rescue Mac. But what they discover inside is an entire civilization of people and animals with it's own culture, politics, and wars.Decemberists frontman Meloy, as well as his talented wife Carson Ellis who illustrated the book, have definitely been influenced (in a good way) by fairy and folklore as well as children's classics such as Narnia. Wildwood is a fun read with wonderful heroes, terrifying villains and a rare sense of wonder.
