What a wonderfully informative book about how global trade began in the 1600s. I also loved how he used the device of taking a Vermeer painting (and some other objects from the time) to tell a piece of the story. Not dry and it went fairly quickly. He closes with a chapter extrapolating from John Donne's poem which contains the line, "No man is an island..."
