Stephanie Lawton’s Want follow seventeen-year-old Julianne (Juli) who has a deep passion for music and wishes to get into New England Conservatory. When her piano teacher suffers a stroke and his job is handed to his nephew Isaac, a graduate from New England Conservatory, Juli sees it as a sign. At first, Isaac shows no emotional feeling but as they spend more time together, he begins to open up to her. Their attraction to each other is complicated because of their ten year age gap. They know their environment would not accept it, especially for Juli’s mother.

The story is Juli and Isaac is very intriguing. Juli is broken with low self-esteem and very defensive. Isaac comes along and it seemed like he’ll be the one that will save her, but all along, he’s just as broken as Juli. Although their relationship gives them comfort, it is not healthy because of their situation. Enter the very charming Dave into the picture and things gets very complicated.

I like the fact that Stephanie is able to create two characters that are very real. She draws you into this southern world with deep rooted in tradition and plenty of dark secrets. As the story unfolds, readers will be pleased with how Stephanie is able to make every page nerve-wracking as Juli tries to make the right choice and pick the right man. The subject matters get emotionally deep but it was written out well and don’t tend to come off as over-the-top. This direction makes every moment in the story to be authentic. The ending is unexpected but it was a pleasant surprise. Stephanie’s writing is uncomplicated but very beautiful. She knows how to pull readers in and I, for one, would love to read more of her stories.
