Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James

Bad Book Is Like Other Bad Book Shock

At a standing-room-only press conference earlier today, top researchers from the world famous Goodreads Center for Bodice-Ripping, Bondage and Twilight Studies revealed that a bad book was quite a lot like another bad book.

"When I saw the final results of the data analysis, a cold shiver went down my spine," said the Center's director. "The chain of inference is long, and at first we weren't sure all the steps were watertight, but now we're confident enough to go public. Expressing it in layman's language, what we have here is basically that this bad book is similar to another bad book, which in turn closely resembles a third bad book. The implications are literally mind-blowing and we're still trying to understand them. Thank you."

In other news, E.L. James was briefly hospitalized after a pile of gold coins collapsed, partially burying her for several minutes. She suffered "minor contusions and abrasions" but was able to return home to her money-cave following a medical examination.

Heh.

Moira Russell Also did you see this? http://dearauthor.com/features/indust... http://dearauthor.com/features/beyond...

You can read the original fanfic HERE http://www.wattpad.com/1114636-master.... It was by "Snowqueens Icedragon." No, really. Really.

Manny Good heavens, those researchers at the Center for Bodice-Ripping, Bondage and Twilight Studies are diligent!

message 7: by Christine (new)

Christine I forgot about the premise, but is this the book with highly competitive bidding for the movie adaptation? Wherein a certain someone actually went out of the bidding to take a call from Obama? O.o

message 8: by Manny (new) - added it

Manny I hadn't heard about the call from Obama. I wouldn't expect him to be into Twilight fan-fics, but most likely it was for his daughters. You have to admit it'd be a great birthday present.

message 10: by Jane (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jane only have to look at my avi to see it's unlikely I'd agree with your take on this book...it's a GOOD book!!

message 11: by Manny (new) - added it

Manny Jane, my opinion of this book is based on pure, unadulterated prejudice and hearsay, and I'm proud of it. I have not even sullied my hands by picking up a copy, let alone opening one.

message 12: by Manny (last edited 20. April, 08:23 Uhr) (new) - added it

Manny PS But I respect your view of it too. Despite the fact that I know it's wrong.

message 13: by Jane (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jane LMAO I finally sullied my hands with the 'printed' version today for fear my kindle might one day break and leave me without my '50' fix..........I can clearly see how some men could feel the need to call this a 'bad' book, after all they are bound to be intimidated by Christian and his charisma!!!

message 14: by Jane (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jane P S I dare you to read it Manny, maybe you would be aw-struck by Fifty too!!!!

message 15: by Manny (new) - added it

Manny Hmm... if you look at my reviews, you'll see that I quite liked Histoire d'O but was less keen on Twilight, and this sounds like a cross between them. What is the mix, roughly speaking?

message 16: by Jane (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jane (I do follow your reviews they make me smile ...often!) mmmmmm let me see, well Twilight is about a sparkly Vampire.......I hate vampire books by the way, but Twilight was NOT really about the vampires it was about the love and the protection and the romance ahh *swoon*.....Sorry where was I? Oh yeah 50, now 50 is all about the control and the romance and insecurities and he is like he admits 'fifty shades of fucked up' now women just love a man who is vulnerable and Christian is exactly that....and of course he is sexy as hell too.......there is no comparison between the books....yes it started as MOTU in fan-fic but the only thing the characters shared were names, there is no vampires or werewolves in this book there is no fighting or action and contrary to what 'non' readers of the book say, there is not much sex in it either!!

Jane OMG I Sooooo wish I was I'd be in LA right now instead of rainy England and I'd be making a bunch of money...... And clearly I wouldn't have time to be sat on Goodreads on a Friday night because I'd be out painting the town red with a Christian look-a-like on my arm!!!

message 24: by Manny (new) - added it

Manny But Jane, how do we know you aren't typing this on your PA's latest-model iPad in the private section of an expensive LA restaurant, while your Christian lookalike indulgently strokes your newly coiffed hair and occasionally tries to distract you in various charming ways?

Though I must say that, if you are, I'm flattered. Thank you!

Actually, you could be SQ's sister, or cousin, or best friend... the possibilities are endless.

message 30: by Jane (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jane 'Oh my'...What can I say? It could be that I am in fact the Ice-Dragons cousin 'FlameQueen-FireDragon but I wouldn't want to be accused of name dropping......... Alternatively I could just be some crazed stalker ELJ fan...... Then again I could just as easily be me, a reader who subscribes to Fifty's Blog and on occasion reads the news!!!

'Laters' over and out Charlie Tango

I think you should download it now Manny and read it.....surely I have gone through enough now to convince you it's worth the read!!!!.......(I hope Miss James appreciates the sacrifice I have made to convert the skeptics!!!)

message 37: by Manny (last edited 22. April, 07:42 Uhr) (new) - added it

Manny Okay, okay!

I promise I'll read it directly after The Hunger Games - my review of that book lists the current state of my queue, if anyone wants the details. I'm afraid I do have a few other books to get to first...

message 38: by Jane (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jane Nooooooooooo don't do that to me it's as good as still saying no you won't read it :(.........It's better than the Hunger Games can't you bump it up to at least above 'Carroll Quigley, Tragedy and Hope: A History of the World in Our Time?'.........Though it is really worthy of being read before 'Harold McGee, On Food and Cooking' too lmao

message 39: by Manny (new) - added it

Manny Don't despair, Jane! If you look a little more closely at my shelves, you'll see that I've already made substantial inroads into McGee and Quigley and that I've finished many long books...

message 40: by Jane (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jane Phew *wipes head* glad to hear it. No rush just keep in mind those Mayan predictions!!!!!

message 41: by Traveller (new)

Traveller You could always just pretend you read it, Manny.. XD Heheheheh. Just kidding.

Hope it's less painful for you than HG was for me. Afterwards I felt full of hate towards Collins for having put me through that torture..

message 42: by Jane (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jane He can't do that I will test him with questions I know can only be answered by someone who has read the book!!!

Jordan HEHEHE Oh Manny! It's sooo BAD. That's why for some unknown reason I read the whole trilogy !! Think it was the same problem why you and I read all of the Twilight books. It's just so bad you can't believe its happening. Anyone else think she stole HUGE parts from "The Story of O"?

Just saying

Jordan Now reading some of the other comments "Story of O" was awesome and well French!! She doesn't even use BAD and DIRRTY words in these books. Fucking lame.

See what I did there? ; P

message 45: by Jane (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jane What's the story of 'O'?

Jordan "Story of O" is an older French erotica books that is pretty infamous in the Erotica world. I also had to read it in one of my English classes. HAHAHA!

http://www.amazon.com/Story-O-Pauline...

Jordan I'M SORRY but this book is soooo Twilight. To a point where I'm REALLY embarrassed for the author. Look at where it's located. Look at how the characters are described. Just replace the word Vampire for Sex and you'd be good to go.

There are quite a lot of articles about how similar "Twilight" and "50" are. It's so bizarre. Also it's not even good erotica! I was most displeased with that.

Lameness

message 48: by Jane (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jane I cannot disagree more on the similarities between the two stories. Had it not been known first as 'TwitFanFic' no-one would think to compare the two. I can't comment on the story line being similar to that of 'The story of 'O' as I have not read it. I have however read a number of books that have obviously taken ideas from twilight from the sparkles to the mind reading and that does disappoint me.

When this book was first published I felt sorry for E.L.James, for the way so many people jumped on the 'ooo it's fan fiction' band wagon, but now not so much. People have decided to see for themselves and anyone with an open mind who can take the book for what 'it is' not what 'it started out as'will either love the story or hate it. Me? well I love the story! As do a lot of others otherwise it wouldn't be so popular!

I read for pleasure, as an escape, just to relieve the pressures of a busy life. This book gave me somewhere to go, somewhere I didn't have to think about reality, so it's a good book.

When the day comes that I read a book only to see it's downfalls and comparisons to other stories I will stop reading because what will be the point?

message 49: by Christine (new)

Christine Hey Jordan, have you read any Anais Nin books? Those are the purely erotics books I've read. Then mix genre (?) would be Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty. Need to crack open that Story of O copy now. Fifty Shades of Grey is such an intriguing title though...
