Brilliant first novel. Prose fresh and strong. Good characterizations, good story.

Don't worry if you've seen the movie, a pale and mutilated version of the story. The movie ruins nothing and the book is ten times better.

One niggling reservation. Cleve Connell would have made Ed Pell his perpetual wingman; he would not have allowed Pell to "kill" anyone after De Leo's allegations. But hey....

Who's this book for? Military buffs? No. The whole story is character driven. If you can find a copy, read it. Just read the first page. If you can put it down, okay. I'm betting you won't.
