I enjoyed reading this book, even though it seemed pretty dark at times. The main character, Lillian, after witnessing the murder of her Jewish family in Russia and believing that her only daughter has died also, immigrates to New York. She survives one indignity after another as she seeks to make her way in her new world. When she learns from a cousin that her daughter survived and is living with a couple in Siberia, she sets off on a cross-country odyssey to reclaim her. Lillian's is both fragile and strong. The urgency of Lillian's quest, her resilience, her desperation, her yearning for her daughter and for love come across on every page. A very good read.
