Who would ever think a small, rejcted mouse could become a brave and courageous hero? In the far away Kingdom of Dor, such an event was possible. Despereux was the name given to this peculiar mouse. His name means "despair". His birth was not a time of celebration and happiness. His mother was disappointed at his disformed figure, therefore, she assigned him a name of darkness. Despereaux grew up unloved by his siblings, parents, and community. One would think such horrible treatment would bring a person down. BUT, not only was Despereaux's appearance different from the rest, so was his mind. He believed in something greater...some would say he was a dreamer. His life suddenly gained purpose the day he met the Princess Pea. The moment he layed eyes on her, his heart pounded with admiration. From that day forward, he dedicated himself to honor and protect the princess all in the name of love. "Love is a powerful thing." The catch to Despereaux's fascination, was that he was not allowed to talk to the princess, or any human at that matter. When his treachery was discovered, Despereaux was thrown into the dark dungeons...where no one has ever come out alive except the evil rats.
