Garden Spells
by Sarah Addison Allen

Genre: Contemporary Romance | Supernatural

Claire has everything she thinks she needs, until one day she wakes to find a stranger has moved in next door and a vine of ivy has crept into her garden... and her carefully tended life is about to run gloriously out of control.

The Waverley women are all born with a certain talent (i.e. magic) and are all linked to the small charming town where the family homestead has been for generations. Thus, when Claire claims the historic house for herself and begins a successful catering business using her special garden - life seems splendid and stable. Then when her sister suddenly shows up with a young daughter & dark secret, the neighbor next door won't leave her alone & is shockingly affectionate toward her, and her elderly aunt no longer depends on her as much due to her new roommate - Claire's peaceful and predictable lifestyle drastically changes...but is she ready for what is to come?

If you've read up on this story, you've seen the comparison to this book to the movie 'Practical Magic' and yes, they are very similar -- grand family home where the whole town knows that there is something uniquely special about the Waverley women and the emotional struggle of two sisters learning to depend on each other after a troubled past. So, if you enjoyed the movie -- pick up the book, it's great. Expect Lots of be-witchery, charm and fun characters that realistically build a wonderful fantasy story full of romance, silliness, and enchantment. Enjoy!

Likes: Claire's talent for using her garden's flowers/herbs to achieve various emotions from her clients/friends was fascinating -- great mood food!

Dislikes: The ending was good but left me hanging (on a happy note!) and wanting more, wish there was a sequel.
