bookshelves: middle-school-multicultural

** spoiler alert ** This is a booktalk...
This book takes place in Australia, which for us makes it multicultural in a couple of ways. This is about a girl who lives a double life. At school she is blond, blue-eyed, pretty but quiet "Jamie." At home she is Lebanese-Australian Muslim daughter, Brown-Eyed Jamilah. (She wears blue contacts to school.) Her father is a very strict man, who does not allow her to be out after dark or let her go anywhere with any boy who is not her brother. The kids at school do not know that she is Muslim and with the racism she sees around her, she does not want to let them know. At home, they do not know that she is hiding that she is Muslim. Her school announces that they are having a 10th grade formal, and they book Jamie/Jamilah's middle eastern band to play at the dance. The thing is her father is not going to let her even attend the dance and if she plays in her band which she loves, the whole school will know her secret.
