4.5 really.

While no MitGoGaE, this book was wonderful. I was not only enchanted by the city-scape Berendt painted, but by the history and the people as well. Berendt has a great ability to paint the picture of a city that is not simply built from buildings and roads, but of the people who inhabit it. Venice would not be Venice without the people who have lived, visited and died there. The people are as much a draw to Venice as the architecture.

I agree with some of the other reviews that there wasn't much of a plot to this book, but that took nothing away from it for me. There are few authors that can make non-fiction read like fiction, but I would say Berendt is at the top of the pile of those who do.
