I can never say enough good things about Daniel Handler, or his fictional pseudonym, Lemony Snicket.
These books aren't just some of the best books for children to come along in years, these are some of the funniest most compelling, intelligent and layered books EVER.
An easy way to look at the concept for this series would be to say that they are an unconventional children's series designed to buck the established traditions in kid's lit. The stories are on the surface unhappy, the bad guy "wins" in almost every book, etc, etc.
But, this analysis would be like saying "the 60s Star Trek created a bunch of nerds." Because, while a simple analysis of a Series of Unfortunate Events can inform you as to what it does...it certainly doesn't tell you what it is.
But I'll tell you. These books are funny, high-brow literature wrapped only in the genre of a children's series. In terms of a writer having a fully realized concept, Lemony Snicket has pulled it ...more
