I have read several of Brooks' books, my favorite being The People of the Book, and so I enjoyed reading about her family in Sidney, Australia, and about her passions as a young girl--her love of all things Jewish, of microscopes and plants, of Star Trek, and of course of writing, including letters to penpals in many parts of the world. As an adult, she even tracks some of them down so they can meet first hand. I was unaware that she had also been a foreign journalist in dangerous places like war zones. A good read.
