Paradise Lost is an epic poem recounting the fall of angels and of man into sin. C. S. Lewis points out that it is not a devotional poem that is meant to draw us into a deeper understanding of ourselves. Rather it is a story that tells us why the earth is the way it is. As such, we can learn from reading it, but the understanding gained is an increase in knowledge rather than an increase in conviction. This has been my experience in reading Paradise Lost.

The poem, along with C. S. Lewis's A Preface to Paradise Lost, has helped me to look at the Biblical creation and fall accounts in a new light. It slowed down the story and brought me insight from Milton's own age. I am thankful I made the effort to read Paradise Lost.
