really liked it
bookshelves: 1990-1999, comics, dc, epic

I think this book gets a bit of a bad rap because of what transpired after it. The lure of the "last Superman story" propelled this story arc to record sales, in part thanks to speculators who thought that the issues would increase in value as the years went by. Of course, in class comic-book fashion Superman's "death" was only temporary, cheapening the impact of this story in the eyes of many readers.

I got this collection as a Christmas present when I was young, and I loved it. Superman's last stand (well, sort of) is a suitably epic tale with a truly nasty villain (Doomsday) and a powerful finale. If in hindsight the "death" was more of a temporary reprieve...well, that's comics for ya. 4.5 stars, highly recommended.
