This book is a Batchelder Honor Book. Good for upper elementary or middle school. I really liked the elf, the man and woman who save him, their daughter, and the dragon - though there wasn't enough of the dragon and the ending was terrible. I won't spoil it for you - but that would have given this four stars if it had been different. The world is falling into chaos and it's up to the last elf and the last dragon to save it. They do with help from those who rebel against the "government" and at great peril. The story is well-told and some very nice touches (the dog coming back reminded me of Argos in "The Odyssey") and some very funny lines, but the ending was wrong. Just saying. Also, just a tad too predictable.
