Painful. Harrowing. Asked a lot of hard questions: both big and small; personal, philosophical, and political - questions that don't have any comfortable answers. Similar to The Remains of the Day in its ultra-simple, direct language; in its extremely intimate relationship between reader and narrator; and in the beautiful, elegiac sadness shining from every page. Different from it in that, when I finished The Remains of the Day, I was able to bask in that sadness for a while, then put it down and walk away, whereas I can't stop thinking about this book.
