Some mysteries are just whodunnits; this novel has an overarching theme of how jealousy poisons our closest relationships. While some of the characters still felt roughly drawn by the end of the book, some (especially Peter, Ruth, Beauvior, and Gamache) were well-fleshed out. Gamache, in particular, is a great character. The ending is not a given, and the setting gives a real sense of place. It felt very Canadian to me.
