How can the history of red dye be interesting? Yet, it is. Greenfield tells the story of what was once one of the most valuable and well-protected substances on earth in a way that captures the intrigue, jealousy, and greed that accompanied it for almost 300 years. Recommended for those interested in fabrics, natural history, or trade and scientific developments in the 17th through 19th centuries.
