Rachel Entertaining, but strains readers' sense of disbelief.

I suppose Grossman is working from the premise "What would magicians/wizards be like if they existed in the real, 2000s-era world?" True enough, his magicians speak like 20-something Americans, but the constant f-bombs and fantasy lit/pop culture references are jarring. OK, I admit that, if I was suddenly initiated into a secret world of magic and whisked off to a magical university, the HP references would be legion. However, this book borrows so heavily from C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, Harry Potter, the Matrix, &c. that I kept being jolted from the narrative, which really detracted from the better, more original parts of the book. Fun book, but probably not enduring.
