Read this for a graduate level lit course and remember liking it; although, this "remembering" is, at best, vague. Recall with uncomfortable clarity a movie based on the novel that was nearly pornographic in its portrayal of the lovers' sexual encounters. Yikes! Oddly, I don't recall the book as being so explicit–deals with sexuality in a manner that, if it can't be termed more subtle, memory suggests was undoubtedly more refined. Of course, words have that advantage over images which too often carry the subtlety of a sledge-hammer. Perhaps a lesson in the argument that some books really need not be made into film...
