Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed is about a naked mole rat named Wilbur who likes to wear clothes, unlike the other naked mole rats. Because of his unusual preference, he faces opposition from his peers. Although he gives reasons as to why he likes wearing clothes, the others try to explain to him that it goes against their tradition. Because so many naked mole rats are against him, he wears less clothes that he would like to. However, in the end, when the Grand-pah mole rat supports Wilbur’s new habit of getting dressed, Wilbur has the confidence to be himself, and realizes that some other naked mole rats like clothes too. The text relates to my theme unit as Wilbur is unique. Unlike other naked mole rats, he is happy wearing clothes. When they question him as to why he is wearing clothes, he brings up the question “Why not wear clothes?”. The text can be used to show students that it’s okay to ask “why not?”. It also shows that it is okay to be different even if sometimes people do not support differences. In the end some naked mole get dressed, and the reader finds out maybe Wilbur wasn’t the only different one, but the only one brave enough to be different. Whether naked or dressed, all the mole rats have a good time together. The text leaves off with the message that even if you are different, it doesn’t mean you aren’t a part of the community.
