The Lost Colony mystery is a story that has not been overly fictionalized, and that makes this a refreshing plot line. However, the rules of alchemy/magic in the book are not explained and leave the reader feeling lost about the purpose of the two main characters and their back story. I did enjoy Miranda's character, but wish that I knew more details about her parents (especially her mother) and her everyday life before the curse manifested itself on her face in the form of a snake. Which leads me to ask, "Why a snake?" There are quips and comments clever enough to lighten the mood and the basis of the story will encourage readers to seek more information about the Lost Colony, but all-in-all this is one for the bottom of the to-read list.
