I don't usually like stories written through poems, but this one I really enjoyed. The blend of humor, wonder, and brusque reality pulled me in, especially in the first section, where they are still in Vietnam. The main character may be a Vietnamese girl, but much of what she feels in universal. After talking about how annoying her brothers are, she writes, "I can't make my brothers go live elsewhere, but I can hide their sandals." It's this slightly offbeat take on everything that is happening to her and her family that makes me enjoy both the character and the story.
