it was ok

Wrede's writing is not the worst I have ever read. In fact, if she learned character development and some tactics for plot, her style itself is smooth and occasionally beautiful. However I found myself halfway through this novel, valiantly trying to follow the unnecessarily convoluted plot and to care about the incomprehensible motives of the characters. I stopped reading carefully and skimmed the second half of the book, so in all fairness I did not read it cover to cover. But from what I saw, that exercise was not necessary. The plot never seemed to unravel in a compelling way.
